Keeping your Pets Safe at Home

When you bring home pets, whether it is a dog, cat, fish, bird or other domesticated animal, you want to make sure that you have a safe haven for those animals to live in. Your pet will want to investigate their new territory, which is natural. You can do your part to ensure that your pet stays healthy and happy in your home by making sure to minimize all potential dangers in your home.

First off, any children in the home should be taught pet safety. They should be taught to treat the animal with kindness and respect, and not to go near them while they are eating. Barriers should also be put up to keep your pet from getting into areas that they shouldn’t be in. All chemicals should be kept up and out of reach of animals in the home, especially dogs. While you may think they won’t touch them, there have been cases of animals getting into poisonous substances, causing grave illness and death. This is also true for medication, both over-the-counter and prescription.

Always investigate what types of plants in your home may be poisonous, especially for the heath of your cats, who may chew on them. Also, make sure all electrical cords are wrapped up and hidden safely out of the way. Dogs and cats can be electrocuted chewing on cords and wires. You also should keep any types of string items, such as floss, yarn and rubber bands up and out of reach of your animals. Swallowing these can cause internal blockage, which could lead to a serious infection and/or death.

Keeping your pets healthy is important when you take on the responsibility of ownership. Taking the proper steps to ensure that your home is safe for your pets will help them live a long and happy life.
